Paul Catanese: Visible from Space http://www.paulcatanese.com
Within Cantenese's presentation he highlighted a series of exploratory research projects.
‘Drawing in the expanded field’ is a series of site-specific performances’ in Death Valley.
Cantanese had been working with rockets to collect data; collecting high speed recordings and transforming these into real- time to create drawings for an overhead projector.
He had looked at accessible tools that capture moments in time. The notion of a Drone as material for new ways of seeing within the desert illustrates an innovative and exploratory process; the drone as a drawing tool. The notion of drawing in the expanded field within beautiful landscapes act like individual worlds revealing 'aerial surveillance vinyls'.' This way of working forces the panoramic software to do the ‘right’ / ‘wrong’ thing and in a sense the technology begins to ask questions.
I was inspired by the playful nature of Cantanese's practice; the craft and the technology, and the parallels of art and science. The work created as a result of these explorations were not resolved outcomes but seemed more concerned with prompting further questionning and exploration, especially in terms of pushing the boundaries between using technology as a craft tool.
